Depression as deadly as smoking. That is the conclusion derived from a unique studyconducted by scientists from Britain and Norway. The results of this study have beenpublished in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
Researchers from the University of Bergen in Norway and King's College Londoncompared the survey data of more than 60,000 people with an average mortality data.The result, during the four-year study found that the risk of dying from depression reallyworth the risk of death from smoking.
Depression and smoking, both known as risk factors for heart disease. In addition, people who are also smokers tend to be depressed and less physical activity, which isanother serious factor causing heart disease.
"Depression is a major risk factor for heart disease, like smoking," says psychologistJeffrey Rossman, Ph.D., Managing Director of Life at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, as reported from MSN, Tuesday (17/08/2010).
According to Rossman, most people with depression just save all the burden in his mind and considered that they experienced was not a medical condition.
"Should a depressed person looking for someone with whom to share the burden of thinking, such as family, friends, therapists or doctors. Regular aerobic exercise andpsychotherapy was as effective as antidepressants for treating clinical depression, withbetter long term results," said Rossman.
Rossman recommends three things most important to prevent depression, namely:
Stay active in the dormitory relationships, social, employment and other activities.
Doing physical exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days a week
Eat healthy foods and fresh (not packaged foods) and avoid excessive alcoholconsumption
